The Open Guide to Cambridge

Emmanuel college is a college of the University of Cambridge. Slightly to the east of the "central" cluster of ancient colleges, Emmanuel is situated within one of the city's major commercial areas. The college comprises 450 undergraduates, 150 graduates, and around 80 fellows. The college was founded in 1584 by Sir Walter Mildmay (one-time chancellor to Elizabeth I), making it of intermediate age within the University.

Probably Emmanuel's most famous residents are its numerous, well-fed ducks, which include various rare breeds. These can be found, along with the college's fellows and students, lounging around the Great Duck Pond. The pond is fed by Hobson's conduit, a locally-famous piece of early civil engineering which saw fresh water delivered to Cambridge for the first time, from the Nine Wells springs south of the city.
