The Peking Restaurant is situated on Burleigh Street, at the back of the Grafton Centre. It's not very visible - you have to keep a good eye out for it! Personally, I've only been to The Peking Restaurant once for a work dinner (about 30 of us), so it may be a different experience if dining there with friends or family.

The restaurant is set out with a few tables downstairs, with the majority of the seating upstairs. Not being a lover of oriental food, I was amazed at how much I enjoyed it. There was a wide selection of food available - crab, lobster and prawns were just three of the starting dishes, served with (lots of) chillis and vegetables. If you are not a seafood person, there is always deep-fried chili beef, lamb, or crispy duck pancakes with spring onions, to fill your appetite. Not only did I find the food delicious, but the staff were very polite, friendly and accommodating.

My compliments to the chef!

As of August 2007, a notice in the window warns that it's cash and cheque only; no cards. The Local Secrets review linked below has a comment stating that you can bring your own wine (£4 corkage charge). Not sure if that means that they aren't licensed.

When I last ate there in May or June they definitely had a licence. Prices may seem a little steep but the portions are very generous. And the mixed starter plate has a wider selection than I've found in other places including dumplings and battered squid, served with 4 different dips which are very tasty. Sadly I've always eaten downstairs, where the decor is a bit old-fashioned and past its best, but perhaps it's nicer upstairs. The service of late has seemed a bit slow and casual, but the food is still excellent.
